Data Center Cooling:
A/C Unit Life Cycle & Re-Use

Used data center air conditioning equipment becomes available for a variety of reasons, including changes in facility requirements, facility upgrades, facility closure, among others. Re-use of discarded equipment extends its useful life thereby conserving raw materials and reducing energy use. Recovering asset value provides a compelling reason to recycle equipment.

Refurbishing is an important form of recycling. The raw material savings and energy use reduction results in a smaller environmental footprint.

The refurbishing process begins with the recovery of the equipment. An evaluation of its age, condition and location is completed by a Critical Power Exchange (CPE) Project Manager. Equipment is then purchased by CPE and a schedule planned with the client for disconnection, removal and transportation to our facility.

Upon arrival at CPE, the units are partially disassembled, and cleaned. Components are tested. Any damaged parts are discarded and replaced. All consumable items such as filters, fuses, etc are replaced. The unit is touched up, repainted as necessary and/or exterior panels replaced as required. The equipment is thoroughly tested by a factory certified technician to assure correct functional performance. The system is then ready for commissioning. A detailed point by point check list of all components is completed prior to shipment. Most equipment is refurbished and available for shipment within two weeks of arrival at our facility.

Refurbished cooling systems are offered with an initial startup guarantee, optional extended warranties are available to meet clients needs. Warranties and service contracts often match those of the original equipment manufacturer. Refurbished equipment is highly reliable, provides a substantial cost savings and allows often scarce and valuable capital to be used for other important purposes.

To summarize, asset recovery by CPE saves valuable raw materials, lowers energy use and reduces the carbon footprint. Up to 85% less energy is required to refurbish a product when compared to new production. Worldwide energy saved from all forms of equipment refurbishing and re-use was recently estimated at 400 trillion BTU’s (British Thermal Units) per year!

There are estimated to be more than 73,000 firms employing over a half-million people involved with some form of refurbishment in the United States alone. This rapidly growing market segment provides an important and growing resource for equipment disposal and re-use. The economic advantages and convenience of recycling will certainly continue to provide a valuable service, now, and in the future.
